What are lip closure exercises?

To improve swallowing, the lip-closure exercise is used. They are used for dysphagia (difficulty swallowing). These exercises may improve lip strength and mobility over the course of time. This may increase the ability of the person to swallow. These exercises may also be used in combination with other types.

Before you swallow your food, you need to ensure that the size, shape and texture of your food can be swallowed. This material travels through your mouth to the parts of your throat known as the pharynx, larynx, and pharynx. The liquid or food travels from here through a long tube called the esophagus before entering your stomach. This movement requires several actions from the muscles located in these areas.

The muscles weakness in these areas can make swallowing difficult. An SLP (speech-language pathologist) might recommend specific swallowing exercises to help improve your swallowing. These exercises may help to increase strength, mobility, and control. This could help you to swallow again normally.

Why would I need to do lip-closure exercises

Dysphagia patients may need to do lip-closure exercises. Dysphagia can result in food and fluid getting into the airways and lungs (aspiration). This could cause pneumonia and other problems. This is why it's so important to identify and promptly treat dysphagia immediately if you have it.

Dysphagia could be caused by medical conditions. Some examples include:

Dementia

Sjogren syndrome, a condition that reduces saliva, is an example.

Parkinson disease and other nervous system disorders

Muscular dystrophies

Blockage of the stomach, as caused by a tumor

History of chemotherapy or radiation to neck or throat for cancer

An SLP may be more willing to prescribe lip exercises for you if you are experiencing difficulty in swallowing the first phase. This could occur due to a bite defect or stroke.

What are some of the potential dangers associated with lip-closure?

Lip closure exercises have been proven to be very safe. You can stop doing the exercises if you experience any discomfort. You should immediately inform your doctor. These exercises shouldn't be done unless you have been prescribed by your physician.

How do you prepare for lip-closure?

Before you begin your lip closure exercises, it is possible that you will need to modify your body position. If this is necessary, your SLP should give you directions. This could be a good idea if you can do them while awake.

It is also beneficial to get rid all distractions from your life. Turn off the television so you can do the exercises at a time that is quiet and free from distractions. This will help you concentrate on your exercises, and allow you to get the most out of them. You can complete these exercises whenever it is convenient for your schedule. Your SLP may let you know what you need before you begin.
